FIREFIGHTERS are tackling a large field fire in Tarporley this afternoon, Thursday.

A total of eight fire engines were called to Sapling Lane at around 1.50pm.

The fire, which covers approximately two square kilometres of barley, also involves a combine harvester. 

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Eight fire engines are in attendance, with crews splitting the fire into sectors to deal with the incident.

“Firefighters are working with the farmer to create a fire break to prevent the fire spreading."

At 4pm, an update reads: "Firefighters are making progress in dealing with the fire, which is approximately 4.2 hectares in size.

"The fire has now been surrounded, with crews tackling hotspots and working with the farmer to damp down using a bowser.

"Two hose reel jets are being used to cool the combine harvester."

As of 5pm, fire and rescue resources were beginning to be scaled back, with the number of fire engines on scene now reduced to six.
