A PARISH council says plans for a new business park in Wincham will cripple the already strained road infrastructure.

Proposals to transform the defunct New Cheshire Salt Works in Wincham Lane into a 198-acre business park have been submitted by Chantry Developments.

But the village's parish council has voiced strong concerns.

Speaking on behalf of the council, clerk Alison Dunabin said: "There is no doubt that the development of this site will result in the generation of a huge amount of additional traffic and types of vehicle movement.

"This is a major cause for concern in Wincham and the surrounding villages because the immediate supporting infrastructure will not be able to accommodate the additional load.

"The infrastructure both for Wincham and its neighbouring parishes struggles to cope at present."

Lorries already thunder down Chapel Street and Ollershaw Lane, dodging parked cars and negotiating the small hump-back bridge, and parish councillors fears the roads cannot take much more.

To help alleviate the problem, they want to see traffic lights installed at the crossroads of the junction of the A559 and Wincham Lane, as well as modifications to the junction itself.

Ms Dunabin added: "It is imperative that Cheshire County Council begin to appreciate the necessity for a radical rethink of the infrastructure otherwise it will collapse.

"Wincham Parish Council intends to pursue this aspect of the development with the help of its borough and county councillors."
