MPs from across Cheshire have been reacting to the sensational news about Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid resigning from the Government on Tuesday (July 5).

The chancellor of the exchequer and the health secretary added to Boris Johnson’s recent woes when stepping down from his cabinet.

The did so as the PM was forced to make a humiliating apology over a scandal involving former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher.

After quitting their high-profile roles, the pair were swiftly replaced by Nadhim Zahawi (Chancellor) and Steve Barclay (Health Secretary).

Reacting to the news, Weaver Vale Labour MP Mike Amesbury said the country deserved a better leader.

“The fish rots from the head,” he said.

“It’s clear Johnson’s government of sleaze is collapsing, with his cheerleaders now jumping off a sinking ship.

“Britain deserves better.

“It’s up to Tory MPs to ensure he is moved aside and it’s actually now time for the whole Government to step aside.”

A spokesman for Eddisbury MP Edward Timpson CBE said: "Mr Timpson has already placed on the public record his views on regrettable decisions made by some members of HM Government and its staff.

"His views remain unchanged, and his focus continues to be on his Eddisbury constituents and improving the life chances of young people, as it has been since his election in December 2019."

Earlier this year, in an exclusive column for the Winsford Guardian, Mr Timpson said his constituents had been right to be angry about the PM’s role in ‘Partygate’.

“Those setting the regulations –leaders – should lead by example,” he said.

“I find questions about the Prime Minister’s past actions and political future perfectly reasonable; appreciate that these are born out of principle; and that these are difficult judgements to make - particularly on a moral basis, which takes both a sense of personal responsibility and courage of conviction.

“I hope this article you are reading now shows that backbench, constituency MPs like me are not prepared to defend the indefensible.”

Tatton MP Esther McVey and her Congleton counterpart Fiona Bruce have been approached for comment.

We also asked our readers for their thoughts on whether it is time for the PM to resign and several of you did, including Dave Baguley, who said: “Absolutely not, the House should have a vote of no confidence in the Government, and it should be taken off him in the disgraceful manner befitting him.

Beth Roberts posted: “The whole house should be sacked - every party - and new parties be formed from people who have worked for a living (in the private sector) for a minimum of 15 years.

“The career politicians have no idea what the real world is like and cannot identify with the working public.”
