A SOLDIER has been fined after smashing a Northwich shop window in the early hours of Christmas Day morning.

Declan Campbell, of Swinton Barracks in Wiltshire, was seen on CCTV headbutting and punching the window of Ivy Cottage Interiors on Crown Street.

The 23-year-old had initially denied being responsible for the mindless act of criminal damage on December 25 last year, but changed his plea to one of guilty on the day of a proposed trial.

He was appearing at Chester Magistrates Court on Friday, July 1, where he was fined and told to pay compensation to the fledgling business.

Ivy Cottage Interiors, which only opened its doors in June last year, was awarded £795.50 in compensation.

In total, Campbell was ordered to pay £1,711.50 – which includes a fine of £560 and court costs of £300. He must also pay a £56 surcharge which will help fund victim services.
