A LEADING charity is desperate to maintain a strong presence in Northwich, despite having to close its main shop.

Care UK has been based in the former Co-op on Chester Way for more than four years but is having to move as budget supermarket chain Farmfoods is taking over the premises.

For the charity, which has won much praise for its efforts in sending trucks of much needed aid and goods to Ukraine, Greece and Syria, the town remains high on its agenda.

Nora Carlin, the founder and CEO of the charity said although she was grateful a new shop would be opening soon in Gadbrook Park, having a town centre presence was hugely important.

She said: “We’ve been so lucky to occupy that building for the last four and a half years is now being taken over by Farmfoods.

“We are delighted and grateful to the Co-op group for allowing us the use it for so long.

“Although will be taking a property on Gadbrook Park we’re still looking for a big space in Northwich.

“We are still operating and continuing our good works and have a large depot and two shops in Warrington as well as the foodbank in Appleton Thorn.

“But Northwich is central to a lot of the work we do.

“The town has been fabulous in terms of volunteers and people helping us.

“We’ve helped thousands of people locally and want to continue to do so.”

With plenty of opportunities in the town centre, including in Barons Quay, Nora said allowing a charity to occupy a vacant premises is a two-way street.

“There are places empty in Barons Quay that we can’t get into.

“And we need a substantial building to retail out of

“It’s a two-way street, because obviously we take all the hassle off the building owner by occupying it and paying the rates.

“Plus, for a charity like us, who is active in the community, it’s footfall to the town centre.”

Farmfoods have confirmed they will be moving into the building in the coming months, although no indication has been given about an opening date or how many jobs will be created.
