ANDY and Doll Jones are no stranger to winning awards for the pub they own in Moulton - The Lion.

Now they have another to add to their collection after they came top in our search for Best Pub in Cheshire 2022.

The couple, who have been running the pub on Main Road for the past nine years, scooped a North Cheshire CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) award in 2020 and 2021 for their services to beer.

The latest title – Pub of the Year – came as loyal locals voted for the venue as part of our Best of 2022 campaign running in the Northwich Guardian each week.

Previous winners include Lissie Wright Hair, JD’s Café and The Beauty Spot with readers currently voting for the best gym or fitness instructor and nominating places that serve the best fish and chips.

Andy, who is 49, and his wife Doll, who is 43, took over at the pumps in 2013 and wanted to support local breweries serving ales that are sourced based on customer recommendations.

Andy said: “We decided to take the plunge nine years ago and wanted to keep the traditional feel inside the pub as customers like to visit somewhere that’s open and friendly where they can enjoy a chat and form new friendships.

“It’s a lovely atmosphere created by lovely people and we didn’t want to make too many changes.”

The Lion’s visitors come from far afield to enjoy the wide variety of drinks on offer.

One happy customer said: “Lovely service, great music and fun quiz nights as well as a great football screen and the best landlords.

“I’m not from Moulton but I’ve always been made to feel welcome by Andy and Doll.

“The best pub I’ve been to by a long shot.”

During the first lockdown at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic Andy and Doll decided to serve takeaway pizzas and once they reopened their doors people continued to visit the pub wanting a slice or two of the Italian treats.

Andy said: “Pizzas are a great snack to accompany a drink or two at The Lion but Doll and I have to be careful not to eat too much each week – the smell of the pizzas cooking is irresistible!”

Andy added: “The Lion is in the middle of a great community and we open our arms and our doors to people that live nearby.

“The support we receive from people is fantastic and winning this award is down to them.”
