A GARDENING duo in Winsford have been delighted with the success of their annual plant fair – smashing their fundraising record.

John Malam, a councillor for the Gravel ward, and his wife Hilary, hosted the event on May 7 at their home in Woodlark Close, off Rookery Rose in Wharton.

A variety of items were on offer, including tomatoes, peppers, chillies, courgettes, cucumbers, runner beans and rhubarb, alongside annual and perennial flowers and gardening items.

The fair was all in aid of St Luke’s Hospice, after Hilary was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 and was fortunate enough to receive complementary therapies to aid her recovery.

John said: “It was a non-stop whirlwind of a day, which raised a fantastic £1,745 for St Luke’s.

“A steady stream of visitors came to our front garden and to our neighbours’ who had gazebos on their gardens too.

“By the end of the day, almost everything had gone.

“People were so very generous and said how much they enjoyed coming along.

“The amount raised for St Luke’s was up on last year’s total and has set a new record.

“We’ll be doing it again next year and hope to be every bit as successful.”
