POLICE are warning residents to remain vigilant against opportunistic thieves who could target homes with open doors and windows during the summer.

With warmer weather forecast in the coming weeks, officers are issuing advice to those tempted leave doors and windows open to cool their homes.

Chief Superintendent Alison Ross, of Cheshire Police, said: “We know the public understand the importance of keeping their home secure but it’s important that we think outside the box with the hot weather imminent.

“It’s tempting to leave a window in the back open or the front door unlocked while you are in the garden or even just to nip up the shop - however there are career thieves out there who look out for these signs and sneak into homes to take expensive and sentimental items while homeowners are blissfully unaware.

“I can’t say enough how important it is for people to be vigilant as burglars will be on the prowl, preying on houses and flats, scoping out the windows or doors that are frequently open.

“Please think twice when leaving a window, door or gate open when sunny weather arrives – to stop yourself from being a target.

Chief Supt Ross added: “To those thieves thinking about trying to sneak in to homes this summer, know that we will be watching and waiting.

“We will be upping our response and making it incredibly difficult to even think about committing this type of crime here in Cheshire.

“If you are suspected as coming into the county to target homes – we will target you and take action.”

Police advice on keeping your home safe

  • Ensure all windows are closed and locked or, at the very least, use the security measures on some windows which allow you to lock them when partially open
  • All external doors should be always secured, even when you are at home
  • Keep all valuables out of sight and ensure that large amounts of cash are never kept in the home
  • Always use a chain if you are unsure of the identity of visitors to your home when answering the door – or similar
  • It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on your neighbourhood and report any suspicious activity to police
