A BID for levelling-up funding to build a much-needed new bridge in Northwich remains on track, despite criticism of the application process.

The need for a new bridge in Winnington has long been called and campaigned for and Cheshire West and Chester (CWAC) council is on schedule to apply for funding.

The deadline for applications in the second round of levelling-up funding is July 6 and the proposed bid is expected to go before councillors in June for their approval.

However, the fact a formal bidding process is even necessary for such an important infrastructure project has been question by the town’s MP.

Mike Amesbury said: “At every turn there’s been dither and delay, meanwhile constituents and residents have been waiting for this vital piece of infrastructure for a considerable number of years now.

“I have made my feelings clear to Government ministers on numerous occasions and will continue to do so.

“I am wholeheartedly backing this bid for much needed investment but it’s a shame we are having to go through a competitive bidding process because it should be about need and clearly there is a need for this bridge and associated infrastructure.

"Not only would it ease the daily traffic congestion faced by motorists, but it would unlock the regeneration of the old chemical works site."

The Weaver Vale MPs comments were echoed by town councillor Lee Siddall, who represents the Winnington and Castle ward.

He said: “As a local councillor and resident of Winnington and Castle, I'm extremely pleased to find CWAC is on track to apply for money from the second round of government levelling funding.

“I find myself in agreement with Mike as it's crazy that we are required to go cap in hand to the government for vital road infrastructure when so many large developments are given the green lights in the area.

“This is not levelling up, it's just common sense!

“I'm hopeful that because of the benefits a new bridge will bring to both constituencies and the cross-party support from both Mike Amesbury and Esther McVey, the government's decision will be an easy one to approve the funding that Northwich so urgently needs.”
