BUSINESSES have been praised for their efforts in helping a charity raise much needed funds.

Down Syndrome Cheshire launched a campaign in March asking people to fill a sock with pennies they found lying around the house or behind the sofa.

In a bid to mark World Down Syndrome Day (March 21) several of the town's businesses also got involved, by displaying fundraising posters and asking customers to put any loose change in socks kept on counters.

In total, Cheshire businesses and their customers raised £248.26 for the charity - which just goes to prove that every penny does count.

Shops and businesses including Chapel Gift Company and Northwich Vapor got involved.

The retailers then delivered their socks full of pennies to Radio Northwich in Baron’s Quay.

The fundraising was part of the charity’s World Down Syndrome Day campaign, on March 21. The awareness day is held on the date 21/3 as it represents the three copies of Chromosome 21 which is unique to people with Down Syndrome.

And why socks? Because chromosomes look like socks under a microscope!

Adam Gerrard, project manager at Northwich BID said: "I’m pleased so many businesses got involved with this year’s World Down Syndrome Day campaign to support Down Syndrome Cheshire.”
