A FORMER Northwich mayor and well-known figure in the pigeon flying community has died at the age of 78.

George Mainwaring, who was mayor twice during his time in local government, died on April 10.

His funeral will be held at Lostock Church on Tuesday, May 3, at 11am.

George’s brother Alan said he was a ‘much-loved' brother and will be sadly missed in the Northwich community.

George was born in 1944, and after attending primary school, progressed to Rudheath School.

He left school and was an electrician for ICI before becoming a foreman at Lostock Works.

After getting involved with the Labour party, George was Northwich’s town mayor twice, once during the millennium year of 1999 to 2000 and again during the Diamond Jubilee year of 2012 to 2013 – when his chosen charity was the Salvation Army.

Up until his death, George remained close with his consort Gillian Evans.

He was also a member of the former Cheshire County Council from 2001 to 2009 and served on both the police and fire authorities for the county.

Alan added: “George was a fantastic pigeon flyer and was well respected in it all over the county.”
