FORMER two-time world darts champion Ted Hankey appeared in court today, Wednesday, charged with sexual assault.

Hankey, 54, was brought before Warrington Magistrates Court in connection with the alleged attack in Crewe in September last year this morning.

The former BDO world professional darts champion, of Stoke-on-Trent, appeared for a brief hearing today.

His case was adjourned until April 14.

Hankey, who dressed as a vampire and went by the nickname The Count during his playing days, was granted conditional bail ahead of this date.

He first qualified for the BDO world championship in 1998 and won the prestigious event in 2000 and 2009, also finishing as runner up twice at the Lakeside tournament.

Last December, it was announced that Hankey was withdrawing from the world seniors darts championship - which were held in February.

In 2012, Hankey suffered a mini-stroke and missed the 2013 PDC World Darts Championship.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said at the time of his charge: "The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised Cheshire Police to charge Edward Hankey with the sexual assault of a woman.

"The CPS made the decision to charge the 54-year-old after reviewing a file of evidence from Cheshire Police. The charge relates to an incident that occurred in Cheshire in September 2021."
