LOSTOCK Parish Council is pleading with planning officials to take a new approach to waste management.

As part of Cheshire County Council's waste plan, an application is about to be submitted to build an incinerator at the Brunner Mond site in Lostock.

But parish council chairman Emma Guy, says taking a greener' approach would erase the need for such a facility.

She said: "Many places in the world, like Nova Scotia in Canada, operate a very simple and effective solution to waste management.

"Since around 85 per cent of domestic waste and more than 85 per cent of commercial waste is recyclable, they start by improving their recycling rate at source.

"What can't be recycled can be processed using modern green' technologies, like composting and mechanical biological treatment and the very small amount of inert material left can be landfilled using existing capacity for many, many years."

Ms Guy, who is also a member of incinerator action group CHAIN, fears that if the plans get the go-ahead, low house prices, traffic chaos and ill health would result, as well as putting developers off coming to the area.

"The Northwich Vision will go into decline, which will be sad considering we have spent more than £30million stabilising the town to attract new development," she said.

"We need to look for an alternative and if other countries can adopt a green' approach, why can't we?"
