A NORTHWICH football club has donated half of the gate receipts from a recent match to the Ukraine cause.

Along with other money raised during the match with Whitby Town on March 12, Witton Albion donated £2,100 to help Ukraine.

Acting chairman Graham Wood said: "The current position in Ukraine has escalated disturbingly over recent days with people losing their lives or loved ones due to the military action undertaken by the Russian armed forces.

"The UK and Northwich have strong connections with Eastern European countries especially Poland which has opened its borders to welcome Ukrainian refuges who are fleeing the conflict.

"The humanitarian damage that is being inflicted on the Ukrainian people is terrible and it is to be hoped that the fighting can be brought to a swift conclusion and the people of the Ukraine can return to their homes and commence rebuilding their lives and economy.

"As a gesture of solidarity with the Ukrainian people Witton Albion decided to donate 50 per cent of the gate receipts from the recent game against Whitby Town to the Ukrainian cause.

"This together with other donations received on the day of the match and subsequently means that the club have been able to donate £2,100 to the cause.
