BUSINESSES around Northwich have pulled their socks up to help a Cheshire charity as it steps up its fundraising efforts.

Down Syndrome Cheshire are holding a ‘Pennies Sock Amnesty’ asking on people around the town to fill an odd sock with loose change they might have lying around the back of the sofa.

With an estimated £50million in loose change rattling around homes across the country, never has there been a better time to put it to good use.

With World Down Syndrome Day taking place on Monday, March 21, several of the town’s businesses have also risen to the challenge.

Chapel Gift Company, on Witton Street went the extra thread by using a pair of socks they sell in the shop for customers to fill with pennies.

Owner Beck Strange explained: “It was quite appropriate as we actually sell socks in the shop.

“So they’re not just an old pair we’ve just found or what my husband’s had on!

“We’ve got them hanging up in the shop and it’s proving to be a bit of a talking point as well.

“When customers see them, they’re asking what it’s all about.”

Another local business taking part is Northwich Vapour, with owner Mike Viera saying how it was an important cause to support.

“When customers are coming in and see the sock and the poster, we’re reminding them what the cause is,” he said.

“We’ve also put it on our Facebook page as it’s the only social media we use at the moment.

“I think it’s a great idea for a really good cause.”

Adam Gerrard, project manager for Northwich BID said it was great so many of the town’s businesses had got involved.

“It’s such a great cause to get behind,” he said.

“And it’s so easy for businesses to get involved.

“All’s they need to do is have a sock on their counter for people to chuck their spare change into.”

Lawrence Caygill, CEO at Down Syndrome Cheshire said: “Thank you to all of the businesses in Northwich which have supported our campaign.

"Every penny raised will make such a difference to the charity and the vital services we are able to deliver for our members.”

If you’re filling up a sock at home with pennies, they can be dropped off at Radio Northwich at Baron’s Quay and Down Syndrome Cheshire HQ at 125 – 129 Witton Street.
