A MAN was taken to hospital following a crash which closed the M6 this morning, Thursday.

The northbound carriageway was closed shortly after 8am following a two-car crash.

This occurred between junction 19 for Northwich and Knutsford at Tabley and junction 20 for the M56 at Lymm Interchange.

At its peak, traffic stretched back more than five miles, creating delays of around an hour on top of normal travel time.

Initial reports stated that one of the cars overturned as a result of the collision, with firefighters at the scene having to remove the roof of the vehicle – a Land Rover Discovery.

Northwich Guardian:

Three fire engines from Lymm and Northwich fire stations, as well as from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, attended the incident.

Cheshire Police and traffic officers from National Highways were also in attendance.

A spokesman for North West Ambulance Service confirmed that paramedics took a man in his 60s to hospital by ambulance after receiving a 999 call to the scene at 7.57am.

Meanwhile, a Cheshire Police spokesman added that the man’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Once the man was extricated by fire crews after becoming trapped in the car, he was handed into the care of paramedics.
