A GOVERNMENT minister has confirmed work to rebuild Northwich Train Station is aiming to begin happen 'later this year’.

Northwich Station suffered a partial building collapse in May.

No-one was injured during the shocking incident which saw a huge pile of rubble cascade onto a platform, as well as inside a waiting area.

Writing to the secretary of state of transport, Northwich MP Mike Amesbury asked, ‘what assessment his department as made of the timetable for the rebuilding of Northwich Station after its partial collapse in May 2021'.

Wendy Morton, parliamentary under-secretary (Department for Transport) replied: “The department has been advised by Network Rail that they are working on the design and planning now and are aiming to start the rebuilding work later this year.”

Mike Amesbury had campaigned for the station to become accessible when works were carried out.

Despite this, the MP received a ministerial response last year confirming accessibility improvements won’t be included when the station is restored.

Instead, it has been suggested a grant application should be lodged for the next funding round in 2024.
