A FORMER public toilet block – sold at auction for £61,000 – could soon be demolished to make way for an apartment block.

Plans have been submitted to Cheshire West and Chester Council to demolish the disused toilet block in Church Street, Weaverham.

The proposals would see a three-storey building erected in its place, with an apartment per floor and an option for providing commercial space on the ground floor.

The council had previously owned the toilet block before putting it up for sale by auction last year. The block had been listed at £10,000 before selling for six times the guide price on August 18.

A design and access statement, written by Jay Ashall Partnership on behalf of the applicant, says: "The planning application proposes the demolition of the current toilet block and provision of a new small apartment building containing three apartments with the option of providing a commercial space at ground floor.

"The site lies within a conservation area and adjacent to a site which accommodates a Grade-II listed house.

"The proposals have been shown to respect the site's location and have provided a development which will complement and fit into the site.

"The scheme accords with national planning policy being redevelopment of a brownfield site and with local policy for development in a settlement boundary and in the conservation area.

"It is proposed to make use of as much of the site as possible whilst retaining the new building largely on the existing footprint.

"No off-road car parking is proposed on the site due to its size and the aim to not impact upon the conservation area. Cycle storage will be proposed to the rear of the site."

The plans show the apartments will be divided into two one-bedroom flats and one two-bedroom flat.

Previous planning permission had been granted in 2009 to convert the building into an office for use by Weaverham Parish Council, however this was never enacted.

The deadline for commenting on the proposals is February 25.
