THE leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council says the Prime Minister should have resigned ‘weeks ago’ and has called on Conservative MPs to remove him from office.

Cllr Louise Gittins, who leads the council’s ruling Labour administration, was speaking after the publication of a scaled back version of Sue Gray’s report into alleged Downing Street parties.

The senior civil servant had been tasked with looking in to allegations of 16 alleged events said to have taken place between May 2020 and April 2021.

Her findings were released on Monday, but she said what she could publish was limited as the Met Police was also investigating 12 of the alleged events. Three of these events had not previously been reported.

In a statement, the force said it will also review more than 300 images and more than 500 pages of information.

But in her report, she blamed what she called 'failures of leadership and judgment' at No 10 and in the Cabinet Office, adding that the 'excessive consumption of alcohol' was 'not appropriate in a professional workplace at any time'.

Since the allegations first emerged, Boris Johnson has faced calls to resign, including from MPs in his own party such as David Davis. In a tense debate in Parliament, he called on the Commons to wait for the findings of the Met's report.

But Cllr Louise Gittins, leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council, said: "The Prime Minister should have resigned weeks ago, now it's up to Tory MPs to remove him.

"We don't need to wait for any further reports or investigations to know that he lied.

"Each day he remains in office families are forced to relive the sacrifices they made during the pandemic."

Cheshire West and Chester’s Conservative group declined to comment.
