CALLUM Saunders rescued a valuable point for Witton Albion against in-form Scarborough Athletic at the U Lock It Stadium.

His 16th strike of the season five minutes from time ensured a 2-2 draw after the visitors had come from behind.

Witton still seek their first win of 2022 but having gone into Saturday’s Northern Premier League game four points adrift of safety, every point is welcomed.

Danny Mckenna’s impact off the bench played a part in the all-important leveller too.

The midfielder replaced home debutant Jesse Dowling in the 74th minute and it was his cross that was flicked on by Rob Hopley for Saunders to turn the ball home.

Saunders also bagged Witton’s opening goal.

His initial overhead kick from Isaac Baldwin’s long throw was cleared off the line but when the ball flew back into the box Saunders needed no second invitation to make it 1-0 after 16 minutes.

Witton’s inability to deal with a 34th minute free-kick meant the Seadogs got themselves back on level terms through Luca Colville in a competitive first half.

When the ball was given away in the 60th minute the visitors cashed in when Jacob Day made it 2-1 after 60 minutes but Witton were rewarded for taking the battle to the finish.

Across town, 1874 Northwich lost their third home game in a row as they failed to build on the previous week's impressive 4-0 win at Colne.

They were beaten 1-0 at Townfield by Prescot Cables, who are enjoying a period of rejuvenation and celebrated their third win in a row in their continued bid to move away from relegation trouble in the NPL West Division.

Jack Goodwin scored the only goal of the game after 31 minutes.

74 looked livelier and hungrier in the late stages as they sought an equaliser.

Jake Parker had only just come on to the field when his fine strike pinged wide off a post in the 69th minute.

And the crossbar was hit during a succession of corners in the closing moments.

Joint manager Wayne Goodison said: “It was just said in the changing rooms, an enigma wrapped up in a conundrum today – or something like that.

“We’ve gone from being as good as we were last week to it being kind of just nothing from us really today.

“We just didn’t do well some of the things we’ve done well when we’ve got results.”
