A FORMER Olympic gold medallist and Warrington businessman has been announced as the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs county president for 2022.

Martyn Grimley will lead the union into its second centenary, organising and delivering more than 50 championships, tournaments and matches this season.

The 58-year-old director of the Stretton based financial services business Warriner and Co was a member of the gold medal winning Great Britain Hockey team at the Seoul Olympics in 1988.

Martyn, a member of Ringway Golf Club, is also an extremely accomplished golfer, a past winner of both the county seniors strokeplay and matchplay championships and a regular member of the county seniors’ team.

His appointment in this role comes after the unfortunate resignation of the current deputy president, who under normal circumstances, would have accepted the post of president at the union’s annual general meeting.

The +1 handicapper will be taking on a largely ambassadorial role, representing the county at various events during his year in office but will also organise life members' events for the ordinary golfer.

Throughout his illustrious hockey career, Martyn was capped 178 times for England and Great Britain, making his debut in 1984 and claiming two silvers at the 1986 World Cup and 1987 European Cup alongside his gold-medal in Seoul.

In 2018 he became Cheshire Seniors Strokeplay Golf Champion with a first-time victory at Bromborough Golf Club and also won the Cheshire Seniors Matchplay Championship in 2019.

He later served as a schoolmaster at Dulwich College before he became a hockey coach for Brooklands Manchester University Hockey Club.
