THOUSANDS braved the cold and wind as Storm Arwen failed to blow away the town's big Christmas lights switch on.

While many town's and cities scaled backed their celebrations this year, Northwich went bigger and bolder than ever before.

There were a whole host of events and activities taking place across the town on Saturday, November 27, culminating in a spectacular firework display over the River Weaver.

Lockdown Zoom star Jackie Weaver, who found fame mediating at a meeting of Handforth Parish Council, was given the authority to switch on the town's lights this year.

Town mayor, Cllr Sam Naylor engaged in a moment of festive pantomime with the celebrity, telling her she had no authority to press the button and that he was 'the King of Northwich'.

"Just one moment Mr Mayor," she interjected.

"I think you will find I do have the authority, and by the way, you're already on mute, so don't make me throw you out of this session."

Cllr Naylor and the star agreed to share the responsibility of conducting a countdown to the big moment, with the tree in Barons Quay soon dazzling in rainbow inspired coloured lights.

Speaking the Guardian afterwards, Cllr Naylor added: "It was great to see so many people in Barons Quay.

"There were thousands of people coming out to really do Northwich proud.

"I've known Jackie for a couple of years and it was good fun for her to come down and switch on the lights with me.

"It went really well and I'm just so proud as the town mayor to be involved.

"I just want to thank the town council, Northwich BID, Cheshire West and Chester, and the police for all their hard work making it such a successful day.

"Everything went like a Swiss watch."

Michael Thomas, Chair of Northwich BID said: "It's brilliant to see so many of you here enjoying all of the attractions.

"I had a walk around earlier and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and getting into the festive spirit.

"The local businesses are very grateful seeing everyone.

"We really appreciate your support.

"I really hope everyone has a really fantastic family Christmas, I think we all deserve it."
