NORTHWICH library looks set to benefit from up to £2m of investment that has been made available by the council.

Cheshire West and Chester council have confirmed the future of the iconic Grade II listed building, which has been in a dilapidated state for a number of years.

As part of the scheme, the building, which is currently partially hidden behind protective scaffolding, will be repaired and enhanced to become a multi-use community space, marking the start of a new era.

Northwich library is a jewell in the town's crown.

Cllr Richard Beacham, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Growth, Economy and Regeneration said: "It is amazing to think the library has been operating on the site since 1883, with the current building being built in 1909.

"It’s Grade II listed and clearly a jewel in Northwich’s crown.

"Local members always highlight that it’s valued by the community, and I believe the library has a pivotal role to play in driving footfall into the town centre - especially the Witton Street area.

"The really exciting news is that we now have an opportunity to invest in and develop the library service in Northwich with the £2m of council capital investment which has been made available.

"We are currently undertaking a number of surveys on the building to understand what can be achieved.

"The library service’s ambition for the project is “To repair a much loved listed building and create an identity for the library service and collaborators through new interventions, providing a community space which will bring activity to the high street.

"The scheme will bring multiple organisations into one building where they will each benefit from co-locating.

"From a regeneration perspective, it is clear that this is another crucial project for Northwich that will help to build a cultural quarter at the top of the high street, complimenting the independent shops and other initiatives like the Plaza, where the council is also offering support for events like the music festival last weekend.

Town mayor, Cllr Sam Naylor added: "This iconic building has been left to deteriorate by successive Councils and it’s neglect was a main reason for standing for election in 2014.

"It’s been a long fight but progress is now insight."
