AN air ambulance has been called after a serious accident involving a HGV, lorry and a car has closed the M6.

The northbound carriageway has been closed between junction 16 and 17 and southbound traffic was being held to allow an air ambulance to land.

The accident happened shortly before 10am.

Six fire engines attended the incident.

Firefighters provided first aid at the scene.

A spokesman for North West Ambulance NHS Trust said: "We have taken two patients to hospital.

"A woman in her 60s, a passenger in car as seriously injured and the driver had minor injuries.

"One other was walking wounded."

Traffic is queuing for 13 miles.

Most of the trapped traffic has now been turned around.

Drivers are warned of severe congestion on the A34, A533, A534, Middlewich Road and Congleton Road.

Diversions are in place.
