A RESTAURANT owner has returned to his hometown in India to help in its fight against Covid-19.

Nagendra Kumar Prasad, who owns Kanya, made an emotional return to Govindpur in August to continue helping the poor people living in the community.

Originally joining forces with his younger brother 'Munna' back in April, the pair did everything they could to help, with India at the time, overwhelmed suffering from an acute shortage of basic supplies and PPE.

Tragically, Munna contracted the disease himself in May, and died, which only served to make Nagendra even more determined to help those living in the town.

Having raised £5,000, Nagendra himself topped the amount up to £20,000, which meant he could provide a brand new ambulance, as well as thousands of face masks and PPE kits.

Nagendra said: "Mr brother phoned me in April and asked for some help.

"He told me our hometown was struggling and asked if we could join hands and do something together.

"So I began by sending money over to my brother and he began going out into the community giving items to the people who really needed them.

"He was even helping educate people who live in the slums about how they could protect themselves from Covid.

"Sadly, he ended up getting Covid himself.

"After he passed away it gave me even more determination to carry on doing it in his memory."

The ambulance Nagendra has been able to buy will be adorned with an image of his brother, meaning his memory will live on in more ways than one.

He added: "He may be gone but his thoughts and love for the community is still here.

"That's why it was so important for me to go over there in August.

"We held a memorial service because I hadn't been able to go to his funeral.

"Bodies may die, but he is still here in spirit."

All of Nagendra's restaurants - K2H in Sandbach (which has new branches opening in Northwich and Nantwich soon) and Kanya will continue to help and support the people of Govindpur, until it is no longer needed.
