CHILDREN in Winsford have been whisked away to imaginary worlds as they celebrated Roald Dahl Day last week.

The global celebration of Roald Dahl stories and characters was marked by Grange Community Nursery and Primary School in Brindley Avenue and Darnhall Primary School in Sandyhill Road.

All children at Grange were invited to dress up as their favourite Roald Dahl character, including those from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG, Matilda and James and the Giant Peach.

Sara Albiston, head of school, said: "At Grange, we aim for our children to become life-long readers.

"Reading is paramount to our teaching and learning.

"Opportunities to read varied genres, explore a range of authors and visit places that inspire our writing are woven into our curriculum.

"We are just so fortunate to have such supportive parents and families, who help our children participate in these enriching activities."

The Caterpillar nursery class at Darnhall Primary School also celebrated the day.

The children enjoyed using their fine motor skills to squash, roll and cut Charlie and the Chocolate Factory play dough.

They were also able to create, colour mix and pour potions like in George's Marvellous Medicine, and colour, glue and stick peaches for James and the Giant Peach.

A teacher said: "The Caterpillar children absolutely love stories.

"They have learned that an author is someone who writes a story.
