GREEN-FINGERED residents are celebrating after a successful open day at a community garden launched nine months ago.

On Bank Holiday Monday, guests were invited to the inaugural event for the Wilmslow Community Market Garden at Oakenclough Children's Centre.

More than 80 residents were able to showcase their work since the garden's launch.

Assisted on the day by the Hope Central Food Bank, the open day offered vegetables, plants, quizzes, games, cake, garden tours and gardening advice.

Amy Carroll, from Wilmslow, said: "My children loved getting green-fingered and pulling up some onions and beetroot to take home.

"They loved doing the trail quiz and finding signs, learning about compost and taking part in the wheelbarrow race. It was a brilliant afternoon. We’ll be creating compost at home."

Andrew Backhouse, WCMG committee member, said: "It was brilliant to see so many people from all parts of Wilmslow attending this community event.

"My thanks to all the organisers and volunteers who have made both the garden and the event a triumph."

The open day paves the way for a second event planned on October 30 at the children’s centre as part of Wilmslow’s Festival of Nature.

The day will focus on sustainability, wellbeing and the natural environment with a host of activities throughout the day.

Wilmslow Community Market Garden has set out to get the town growing their own food, produce local fruit and veg and play a part in addressing the climate crisis.

It has been supported and funded by Wilmslow Town Council and The National Lottery Community Fund, distributed by Transition Network.
