TOM Vickers and Jason Cornes met in the final of the Mid Cheshire Merit Trophy at Norley BC on Sunday.

Wharton Cons' Vickers continued his impressive recent form, winning the event for the fifth time to add to his successes in the Roberts Bakery Cup and Norley Merit in the previous two weeks.

Two multiple winners of the Wharton Cons Open competition contested Sunday night's final.

Having clashed in the final of the Grange Sports competition the previous evening, Gary Ellis and Graeme Wilson set up a repeat final. Ellis stormed into an early lead and went on to record a 21-14 victory and claim the £700 prize.

On Saturday at Castle Sports Darren Plenderleith of Tamworth beat Andy Hamman of Castle Sports in a thrilling final of the inaugural George Astbury Trophy. The scores were locked at 20-20 when, after a good lead bowl by Plenderleith, Hamman narrowly missed with two strikes. Plenderleith collected the £350 first prize.

Castle Sports travelled to Wharton Cons on Friday in the Mid Cheshire League and delivered a potentially decisive blow in this year’s title race. Castle recorded 10 winners on the way to a 246-181 victory. Steven Baskerville and David O'Brien led the way, both returning 21-7 victories. Only Owen Cookson and Shaun Yearsley got into the winner’s enclosure for Wharton.

The second running of the Tony Whitney Memorial Trophy takes place at Owley Wood, Weaverham, on Saturday. A high-class field of 64 bowlers that is littered with previous Waterloo and All England winners will play in memory of an Owley Wood legend. Play Starts at 10.30am and there will be a barbecue on all day.

The Whitby Cup resumes on Monday. Winnington Rec will be looking to repeat their giant-killing exploits of a few years ago when they meet Castle Sports A at Lostock.

Current holders Owley Wood B continue their defence of the trophy when they face off with Red Lion A at Hartford.
