KITWOOD House – a unique 68 bed centre of excellence in dementia care – has opened its doors to the community.

Located in Rudheath, the new site is described by care professionals as 'the next generation in dementia care' with a train simulation, mock shops and UV cleaning.

Following months of fitting out themed interactive areas, soft furnishings, and other decorations, Kitwood House opened its doors last weekend.

Two open days were held on Saturday, August 14 and Sunday, August 15, and both were fully booked soon after they were advertised.

Kitwood House residents can enjoy a full day out, jam packed with activity, without ever leaving the building thanks to a number of themed interactive areas.

Residents can buy a train ticket from the ticket office, a newspaper from the kiosk and wait in the waiting room until it is time to board the 'train'.

The train itself is a RemPod railway carriage with an LED window display that projects the sights and sounds of a moving train.

There is also a mock market café, green grocers, bakers, and other shops such as a tailor and hardware store.

A spokesperson said: "An enormous amount of research, care and consideration has gone into making Kitwood House a centre of excellence in dementia care and staff couldn’t wait to show people around to gauge their opinions.

"It was a very emotional day and tears were shed by a number of visitors who had never experienced anything like it.

"All the guests were extremely impressed with the facilities, the design and attention to detail.

"They were also enamoured by the care and enthusiasm of the staff they were able to talk to on the day."

One visitor said it was: "Wow with a capital W", with others commenting on how 'it has the feel of a luxury hotel'.

A gentleman added: "It is absolutely brilliant, six-star accommodation."

Residents will be moving into Kitwood House from Monday.
