A WINSFORD man has been jailed after being convicted of assaulting several people, including a mother carrying a child.

Gary Vincent Smallwood, of Dutch Close, attacked Aiden Briscall in Northwich, causing him actual bodily harm on July 31 last year.

The 36-year-old, who had initially denied the charge, was sent to prison for a total of six months, after changing his plea to one of guilty.

The defendant, who also uses the alias of Jason David Smallwood, had already admitted to a second assault, against Antony Briscall, which took place on the same date.

He was appearing at Chester Magistrates Court on August 11 for sentencing, after being found guilty of committing two other assaults.

Those two offences were committed on February 21 this year, when he assaulted a mother who was holding a child at the time.

Magistrates deemed the offences to be so serious, with the actual bodily harm assault and the one on the mother carrying the child, both crossing the custody threshold.

As well as receiving a 26 week jail term for the assault on Aiden Briscall, Smallwood was also given a ten week concurrent sentence for each of the three other counts.

He must also pay compensation of £400 to Aiden Briscall, £100 to Anthony Briscall and £200 to the mother and her child.

The court also made Smallwood subject of a restraining order, prohibiting him contacting any of his victims.
