CLOSURES on the M6 southbound following a serious collision this morning, Friday, are set to be in place 'for some time', according to North West Motorway Police.

The M6 is still closed southbound between junction 20 (Lymm Interchange, M56) and junction 19 (Knutsford, A556) due to a collision between a HGV, a white panel van and a silver Mercedes.

The driver of the Mercedes is believed to have sustained serious and life-threatening injuries and has been taken to hospital.

Experts have examined the scene all three lanes and the hard shoulder will need to be resurfaced due to a large diesel spillage.

There is also damage to the central barrier and the clean up operation is 'expected to be protracted with the closure in place throughout the afternoon'.

Motorists are being diverted and told to exit the motorway at junction 20, join the M56 travelling eastbound, exit at junction seven and travel southbound on the A556, to rejoin the M6 at junction 19.

There are currently severe delays of 90 minutes approaching the closure, and delays of 30 minutes on the northbound carriageway.

The A556 along the diversion route is heavily congested with delays up to 25 minutes.
