THE M6 has been closed by a serious crash this afternoon.
Emergency services have shut the motorway in both directions due to an accident on the southbound carriageway between junction 20a at Lymm and junction 19 at Knutsford.
Three lorries were involved in the collision, which occurred at around 12.45pm.
One of the HGVs is believed to have overturned, with five fire engines having been called to the scene.
Traffic is being diverted onto the M56 as a result and police are advising people to stay in their cars.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "The M6 in Cheshire is currently closed in both direction following a serious collision near Knutsford.
"The incident, which involves three HGVs, was reported at around 12.40pm today, Thursday.
"The collision is on the southbound carriageway, and as result of the incident the road is currently closed in both directions between junctions 19 at Knutsford and 20 at Lymm interchange.
"Local diversions are in place, but motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.
"Further details will be released when available.
"Anyone with any information or video footage in relation to the collision is asked to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number IML1032250."
