AFTER concerns were raised by many residents, it has been confirmed that Winnington Bridge will NOT be closing for 7 weeks.

A road closure sign had been placed by the bridge suggesting it would be closed from July 5 until August 23, however it would seem that contractors put the sign in the wrong place.

The road closure actually relates to gas mains replacement works that are taking place on Hough Lane in Anderton and will not shut off the already problematic swing bridge.

Cllr Lee Siddall, who represents the Winnington and Castle ward on Northwich Town Council said he had been inundated with concerns raised by local residents.

"I noticed last week that the bridge has a closure sign on it for seven weeks," he said.

"However, I wasn't aware of any substantial work that was planned so I thought it must have been some kind of mistake.

"After contacting the town council they were just as curious as me.

"However, an e-mail back from Cheshire West and Chester confirmed they think the placing of the sign had been a mistake by the contractors as they are closing Hough Lane.

"The signs were removed by the council very quickly following that."

Previous closures of the bridge have caused chaos for residents living on either side and Cllr Siddall went on to add how the incident merely adds further weight to the argument for the proposed new bridge.

"Obviously closing the bridge is a major headache to residents of both sides," he added.

"The confusion and distress this causes when the bridge is out of action only adds to the importance of why we need a new crossing."

Although the bridge will still be open for the duration of the works, the closure of Hough Lane from July 5 means there will be a diversion route in place taking in Lydyett Lane, Church Road, Manor Drive and Runcorn Road.

The diversion, plus the introduction of temporary traffic lights in several locations during the duration of the works is still likely to lead to traffic delays and congestion.

Cheshire West and Chester Council have been approached for a comment.
