A PUB landlord in Northwich has said he remains positive the town can enjoy a fantastic summer, despite the latest blow to the hospitality sector.

Adam Prestage, who runs Craft Union pub the Witton Chimes in the town centre, was speaking after the Prime Minister cancelled plans to lift the last of the lockdown restrictions on June 21.

Boris Johnson's announcement on Monday evening is yet another set back for the hospitality sector, with rules on gatherings of more than 30, other than at weddings and test events still not allowed.

However, publican Adam was feeling a little more upbeat about the next month or so.

He said: "I don’t think it's any surprise the extending of the restrictions.

"It makes sense in relation to using the extension to enable lots more people to complete their vaccination programme.

"The science suggests that severe cases are reducing as more people complete their two doses so I think it makes sense and for the sake of a month is the right thing to do.

"As for business, I, like I'm sure many pubs in Northwich are, am blessed with great regulars."

The pub is a favourite venue for live sport and Adam is showing all the games at this year's delayed Euro 2020.

He added: "With our own procedures in place, in line with government guidelines, we can demonstrate we are doing all we can to keep my customers and team safe, with lateral flow testing twice a week and remaining diligent with our sanitisation.

"This has been under pinned by the support we have received by licensing, Craft Union and Adam Gerrard from Northwich BID.

"This in turn gives our customers the confidence to support me.

"Therefore, I remain positive Northwich can enjoy a fantastic summer and I feel the next month will be worth it in relation to the same."

Chris Mundie, who runs The Salty Dog offered a "no comment" response when asked what his thoughts on the lifting of restrictions delay were.

However, the popular pub and live music venue will be cancelling all planned gigs between now and July 19.

Adam Gerrard, Northwich BID Project Manager said: "We will continue to work with our businesses to highlight the hard work they have put in to make their premises and venues Covid-secure and also reinforce the message that Northwich is a safe place to visit and enjoy.

"As we’ve witnessed since the beginning of the pandemic, the business community in Northwich is resilient and determined and we know they will continue to be positive and proactive over the summer.

"Hopefully people will continue to shop, spend and support local over the coming months as they have done since re-opening and as our businesses continue to recover and bounce back."
