TREES snapped in half at the town's new outdoor space are unlikely to be immediately replaced, a leading councillor has said.

Sam Naylor, the Mayor Northwich, said the latest acts of vandalism were 'crazy' and 'mindless'.

The saplings are not the first to be destroyed since the newly created space opened to the public in April.

On the first bank holiday weekend in May, vandals snapped two young birch trees in half, causing much anger in the local community.

Despite police efforts to identify the perpetrators on CCTV and by making other enquiries, no individuals have yet been charged.

And now, over the course of the most recent bank holiday weekend, two more trees were snapped on Friday evening, with another one broken on Saturday.

Cllr Naylor said: "I had a good conversation with Sgt Andrew Cooper, who I know quite well now.

"Unfortunately, from what he tells me, the images they've managed to gleam so far aren't clear enough to be able to identify anyone.

"I believe the police are making further enquiries and they are aware of a group of teenagers who have been causing problems around the town."

After posting on social media about the two trees being broken on Friday evening, just hours later, another sapling suffered the same fate.

"After I heard that, I thought, the more I post about this, the more it seems to be happening," Cllr Naylor added.

"I don't think we're going to replace any of the trees at this moment in time.

"If we do, we might have to consider more mature trees that will be more robust against this kind of behaviour."

A sail to provide shelter from the elements is currently being installed at the site at the moment and plans for that remain unaffected by the vandals.

The newly installed toilets which are already in-situ on Weaver Square will also be opened shortly.

Cllr Naylor said: "At the moment, we're just waiting on the delivery of a disability ramp.

"That's the only reason they aren't up and running yet, but as soon as that gets delivered, they will be."
