EACH week readers send letters into the Guardian on all manner of topics they want to have a say on.

Here reader Paul Dolan shares his thoughts on rail investment in the north of England.

Paul said: "The dramatic photos of the roof collapse at Northwich Railway Station – which thankfully caused no serious injuries – seems to be a metaphor for the dilapidated state of the Mid-Cheshire railway line with its crumbling stations, ageing carriages, insufficient capacity and poor access, that has often meant disabled users and school-kids being left stranded at night on poorly lit platforms.

"Local MP Mike Amesbury rightly asks what has happened to all the investment being promised by Arriva Rail North to improve the facilities at the station and the experience of travelling on the line for its long suffering Northwich passengers.

"After all, rail users already faced an extra £100 hike in the average season ticket fare last year, a price that has risen by a staggering 35 per cent since 2010.

"Yet for all the valiant efforts of our local MP, councillors, the Local Enterprise Partnership and a vocal rail user group to support initiatives such as reviving the Middlewich line to Gadbrook Park, Arriva Rail North couldn’t even fulfil its pledge to run two trains per hour into Northwich last summer.

"So if this Government and its newly created Great British Railway company is really committed to levelling up the country then it must stop prioritising rail investment into the South East at the expense of northern towns like Northwich."
