ENVIRONMENTALLY conscious pupils at Delamere Academy were joined by Eddisbury MP Edward Timpson for a litter pick in Delamere Forest.

Delamere, run by North West Academies Trust (NWAT), is working towards becoming a plastic-free accredited school.

The Surfers Against Sewage scheme encourages schools to ban all single-use plastics, and educate children about the harmful effects that discarded plastic can have on the environment.

As part of their journey to becoming plastic free, pupils are actively involved in projects to tidy up the local environment and Mr Timpson dropped in to help year four children pick up litter at nearby Delamere Forest.

Teacher Lucy Bate said: "Every year group is taking part in some way.

"We have written letters to some of the companies most guilty for creating plastic pollution, and another of our goals in Nunsmere was to undertake a litter pick.

"It is beneficial to the children to get out in their local environment and make a difference, and it was lovely to hear that they all felt proud of themselves for doing their bit.

"They are all very passionate about the environment, so putting what we teach into practice helps to solidify its importance.

"We decided to invite Mr Timpson and it was great that he could join us.

"It's beneficial for children to feel connected to and supported by their Government.

"The children had the opportunity to share with Mr Timpson all the wonderful things they have been doing towards becoming a plastic free school.

"It was lovely that they could share this passion with someone who has influence in the local community."

Surfers Against Sewage is a charity aiming to equip and empower young activists with the tools to create positive, lasting environmental change through their plastic-free programme.

NWAT runs eight schools across Cheshire and Shropshire, including Weaverham Primary Academy and Rudheath Senior School near Northwich and Oak View Academy at Winsford.
