LESSONS were cancelled to give children a relaxing, fun-filled day.

Pupils and teachers at St Mary's Catholic Primary School in Middlewich enjoyed a wellbeing day.

Music was the theme of the special event as different pieces were played to each class throughout the day.

Assistant headteacher Denis Orr-McGuinness said: "Due to the unprecedented events that took place this year, we have done everything within our power to mitigate lost learning through our catch up and recovery plan.

"Our primary concern was to build the mental health and wellbeing of every child in our school.

"It's important alongside the daily wellbeing sessions we have, to take a step back from work and just focus on the children having a fun day together.

"Over the past year, there have been way too many lost days where children have sat at home and dream of just having fun with their friends. It’s days like today which we owe the children."

Pupils were allowed to come to school in their own clothes with some dressing up as famous singers and rappers.

Children had a chance to try various arts and crafts as well as flower arranging.

Some classes wrote and and performed their own pop song based on positivity and happiness.

"One of the activities in my year 4 class was to create a positivity paperchain, " said Mr Orr-Mc Guinness.

"Children worked as a team and wrote a positive message on each strip of paper. When the strips were linked together, we went onto the school field and formed a large positivity circle where they wrapped themselves in positive messages. We spent time to reflect on why we are lucky to have each other.

"Due to the pandemic, we need to ensure more than ever that we continue to develop and keep a positive mindset for every child have the privilege of teaching.

"Children and parents need to know they are not in this on their own and we, as a school family, will continue to move forward together. The children were then able to take part of the paperchain home with them to spread positivity to others."

Pupils were given a doughnut or sweet courtesy of Jack's supermarket.
