A motorist sustained head injuries after his car left the M56 motorway.

Firefighters were called out to the scene of the crash in the early hours of Sunday morning between Junction 14, Hapsford services, and Junction 12 for Runcorn.

Three fire crews from Powey Lane, Ellesmere Port and Frodsham, attended at shortly before 3.15am.

On arrival firefighters discovered the car had left the carriageway and gone down a ditch.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "The driver self extricated from the vehicle and was handed into the care of paramedics with head injuries.

"Crews made the scene safe and were in attendance for approximately 45 minutes."
