A SPORTS lover has smashed the target of an ambitious lockdown challenge as he reaches his final goal.

Matty Ross, who plays rugby, cricket and hockey, has topped £1,500 on his gruelling 874-mile Lands End to John O'Groats challenge.

The 12-year-old Northwich schoolboy has been cycling on his exercise bike at home and has only 60 miles to complete his mission.

Mum Clare, who works under her maiden name as Dr Clare Oxley at GP at Swanlow surgery in Winsford, said: "Matty is really keen to do his final miles from Hartford to the hospice in Winsford which he is likely to be doing on either Friday or Saturday of this week.

"He is not a massive bike rider but this challenge is giving him the motivation to keep on going."

The St Nicholas Catholic High School pupil is raising funds for St Luke's Hospice where his dad Martin is a volunteer counsellor.

Matty plays rugby for Winnington Park Rugby club, hockey for Winnington Park Hockey Club and is a member of Northwich Cricket Club during the summer.

"He is grateful to everyone who has made donations as well as sent him messages of encouragement and support," said Clare.
