WINNINGTON Park Rugby Club have grand plans for their women’s and girls’ section.

Indeed, they want to make it the best of any community club in the county – and they have outlined what they feel they need to do to make that happen.

In preparation for the upcoming return to rugby, the club are aiming to appoint a director of women’s and girls’ rugby.

Huge strides have already been made, with a well-established team playing in the Women’s National Championship and girls’ sides playing at the under 13s, under 15s and under 18s age groups.

Now, they aim to take it to the next level and ensure the junior teams are providing a steady stream of talented players for senior sides and this newly-created role is seen as key to making sure this happens.

“Although this is a voluntary role, it is a key appointment and essential to ensure the ongoing and future success of women’s rugby at our club,” said club chairman Paul Dean, whose daughter is part of the under 18s squad.

“The club will support the successful candidate to make the best of this opportunity and to obtain qualifications if required to allow the person to be successful in this role.”

Park say the postholder will work alongside the committee to make sure that the women’s section is on an equal standing to all other sections of the club.

“The person appointed, who we hope will have a track record in playing and coaching rugby, will be responsible for the appointment of our coaching teams, promoting women’s rugby in the local area, to assist with player recruitment and make sure that all our players are managed effectively so they can reach their full potential,” they said.

“Female participation in rugby is growing rapidly and we want to provide all those that wish to do so the opportunity to play the game.”

Club president Brian Concannon says he wants the women’s section at Burrows Hill to progress as much as possible with equal access to facilities that the men’s team enjoy.

“The ladies are really valued at the club and are now an established part of Winnington Park RFC,” he said.

“We want our ladies and girls teams continue to develop and progress with equal access to the facilities, equipment, and coaching support like we provide for our male teams.”
