DOUBLE Olympian Hannah Whelan is offering advice to youngsters whose sporting routines have been restricted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Hannah, 28, is assistant head coach at Warrington Gymnastics Club. She competed at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 as well as in London four years later.

She won team gold and all-round bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

Hannah’s top tips to stay motivated in lockdown:

1 Communicate:

Talk to your coaches, teachers, family and peers. Let them know if you are struggling so your programme can be adapted and so you can find the right support. You will be surprised at how many of your friends probably feel the same way!

2 YouTube:

YouTube is a great tool for finding motivation. From inspirational ted talks, to watching your favourite athlete at an Olympic Games, there’s plenty to get you up, moving and working towards your next goal.

3 Be kind:

Don’t be too hard on yourself. This is a difficult time for everyone and it’s impossible to feel positive every day. Set yourself small targets each day or week and celebrate the small wins!

4 Be disciplined:

Set yourself a routine. Plan out each day of your week. Being disciplined by sticking to your plan and working hard through your programme will help you when you aren’t feeling so motivated!

5. Rest and recharge

Be sure to spend some time on you, relaxing and doing things you enjoy. Rest is just as important as exercise so make sure to fit some into your weekly plan.
