RESIDENTS are being asked for their views on two new cycling routes in Northwich.

Cheshire West and Chester Council is proposing new dedicated cycling infrastructure in Chesterway, between Station Road and the town centre, and in Northwich Road through Hartford and Weaverham.

The schemes would be funded by the Government's emergency active travel fund, with CWAC receiving £611,800 in a second tranche of funding to deliver projects already identified as part of a 10-year council strategy.

It is hoped the routes will provide a safer environment for cyclists along two of the town's busiest routes – while also promoting environmentally-friendly transport.

Cllr Karen Shore, cabinet member for environment, highways and strategic transport, said: "Cycling saw a huge rise in participation last year.

"Schemes like these are designed to make cycling safer and encourage more people to consider this as an option for both leisure and commuting."

The council attracted criticism for its first active travel schemes last year, including new bus lanes in Chester and cycling lanes in Winsford.

Opposition councillors and campaigners all criticised the administration over the way those projects were introduced – and CWAC is eager to avoid any similar issues in Northwich.

"We are now asking for help from the local communities living close to these proposed new routes," said Cllr Shore.

"We want to ensure the schemes meet the requirements for those directly affected before any work starts.

"We will be talking with local community representatives, there will be information posted to households on the routes and an online questionnaire."
