TRIBUTES have been paid to a Winsford dad who devoted his life to nurturing young footballers.

Tony Mitchell hailed a 'selfless man who gave his all to grassroots football' has died.

The dad-of-two has officiated, managed and coached more than 800 players since he was 15, won countless awards and held various positions.

With drive and determination, he led teams at Winsford Youth Centre, Colts, Athletic, United, Diamonds, Over 3, Woodford and Davenham.

His latest team Winsford Community Disabled Football Club has given young players with a range of disabilities the chance to achieve goals on the pitch they never dreamed possible.

Tony had to give up work after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease when he was only 37. He also had progressive supranuclear palsy.

Yet he has never let his disability be a handicap.

A spokesman for Winsford United said: "Winsford Utd would like to offer their condolences to the family of Tony Mitchell.

"A selfless man who did everything he could to assist local children in their football development. He also made sure that children of all abilities were included, successfully setting up a disability football group in the town.

"He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and a massive loss to the community. Thoughts are with his family in this difficult time."

Tony Mitchell 'gave his all to grassroots football'

The football community has commended his incredible achievements.

Michael Welch said: "An utterly selfless man who gave his all to grassroots football. He was the beating heart of youth football in our town for well over 20 years and what he's done for generations of young people in and around Mid Cheshire should never be forgotten."

Tony's commitment and dedication was acknowledged last year when he won a prestigious national award, named by the FA and McDonald's as Grassroots Coach of the Year Award for youth teams.

Best friend Paul Jones said: “I just can’t describe what he actually does for the community in Winsford himself.

“He’s just a perfect human being to me and a perfect coach.”
