TWO amber flood alerts are currently in force across mid Cheshire – less than a week after some areas were hit by flooding.

The north west is currently experiencing heavy rainfall from Storm Christoph, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for rain from today through to Thursday in mid Cheshire.

The Environment Agency has issued two flood alerts for the area, meaning flooding is possible and residents should be prepared.

On of those alerts is in place for the River Weaver catchment, including Northwich and Winsford, where river levels are expected to peak tomorrow.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: “A prolonged period of heavy rain will cause river levels to rise at the Hayhurst Bridge and Shrewbridge river gauges and consequently flooding of property or roads and farmland is possible.

“We believe there is a possibility of flooding for low lying land and roads around the Rivers Weaver, Ducklow, Wheelock and their tributaries.

“Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses, be aware of your surroundings, and keep up to date with the current situation.”

Meanwhile, the Environment Agency has also issued a flood alert for the River Dane catchment, including Middlewich, with river levels here also expected to peak tomorrow.

An Environment Agency spokesman said heavy rain is expected to lead to high water levels at the Congleton Park river gauge, which could cause flooding of property, roads and farmland.

The spokesman added: “We believe there is a possibility of flooding for low lying land and roads around the River Wheelock, Arclid, Smoker and Fowle Brooks and their tributaries.”

Parts of Northwich, including London Road, were hit by flooding following last week's heavy rain.
