A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "We had a report of an air rifle being fired in the direction of Prescot cemetery gates at around 10am on Saturday.
"Nobody was hit and due to the weather conditions the person reporting wasn’t able to tell us where it was fired from.
"Officers carried out an area search but didn’t find anyone in possession of an air rifle or find any damage or pellets.
"Local policing officers have been made aware.
"Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC quoting log 249 of January 9."
