IT SOUNDS like a daunting challenge to walk 1,000 miles.

However, over a year it takes only 2.74 miles, just less than one hour of walking, per day to achieve it.

And the Steve Prescott Foundation is getting people to walk 1,000 miles during the course of 2021.

Hundreds of people have signed up already for the challenge already.

Among them are survivors of Pseudomyxoma Peritonei, the cancer which Steve Prescott had an inspirational battle with, before he passed away from complications during pioneering surgery in November 2013.

SPF general manager Martin Blondel, who is taking on the challenge himself, said: "We're doing another challenge, another year, another lockdown.

"Unbelievably we have a massive 387 people who have already signed up.

"Some of them are Pseudomyxoma survivors, the illness which Steve had, putting on their walking boots and getting out into the fresh air.

"Not only does it help them but it also helps for people with state of mind issues, with diabetes, arthritis. Get out for an hour a day, improve your mental health, improve your physical health."

On its fundraising page, the Steve Prescott Foundation said: "Did you know it takes less than an hour a day's walking to hit 1,000 miles in 12 months? That doing so dramatically boosts your immunity and cuts your risk of diabetes, heart attack, obesity, stroke and depression?

"Can be done before during or after work or perfect for those needing to pass time during furlough or retirement!

"This challenge can also be run alongside a controlled diet, that also can be part of your FUNdraising target.

"It is also the perfect way to FUNdraise and take in the fresh air and than joining the gym!

"You will also have the craic with fellow SPF supporters!"

People who raise £50 will receive an SPF 1,000 mile T-shirt and an SPF certificate on completion of the challenge.
