TWO mid Cheshire postcodes have been revealed to have some of the slowest broadband speeds in the country.

New data from Uswitch shows that residents living at CW8 4PX, in Barnton, have the slowest average broadband speed in the whole of Cheshire at just 0.1 megabits per second (Mbps).

And it is not much better for residents at CW7 3LN, in Wharton, where the average speed is 1.1 Mbps – the second-worst speed in Cheshire West and the fifth-slowest in the whole county.

At the other end of the scale, Northwich residents at CW9 5PX have mid Cheshire's fastest average broadband speeds, at an impressive 82.4 Mbps.

Ernest Doku, broadband expert at Uswitch, said: “The digital divide that runs through Britain has grown dramatically in the last year, with the fastest street’s broadband more than 5,000 times quicker than the slowest’s.”

“It’s great that more of us are enjoying ultrafast broadband, but we don’t want to see large swathes of the country left behind on shoddy connections that aren’t suitable for modern life.”

Last week, the Government set out a draft strategy to connect one million homes and businesses with 1,000 Mbps broadband in the hardest-to-reach areas of the UK.

It is part of a plan to provide 85 per cent of the country with broadband capable of that speed by 2025.

Matt Warman, Minister for Digital Infrastructure, added: "We will begin these procurements rapidly so broadband providers big and small can move quickly to get the job done and level up communities with this much faster, next generation broadband."
