WARRINGTON Borough Council has announced its revised bin collection schedule for the Christmas period.

Households which usually have their refuse collected on Tuesdays will instead need to put their bins out a day earlier on Monday, December 21.

Residents who ordinarily receive Wednesday collections will have their service moved to Tuesday, December 22, and Thursday’s bin day will be shifted to Wednesday, December 23.

Meanwhile, Friday collections will instead take place on Christmas Eve and Saturday, January 2.

Outside of these dates, there will be no change to the normal service.

Cllr Judith Guthrie, the council’s executive board member for environment and public protection said: “It’s important to keep in mind that a lot of the additional waste we make around Christmas can be recycled.

“You also may not realise that some types of wrapping paper are recyclable, or that some Christmas tree lights can be taken to one of our community recycling centres – you can always check what can go in your black or blue bins, or what you can take to a community recycling centre by visiting the council’s website.”

Christmas cards, cardboard packaging and foil can all be placed in your blue recycling bin – as can aluminium cans.

Some wrapping paper cannot be recycled due to using a mixture of materials, while sticky tape can also cause issues at recycling centres.

Batteries should not be binned as they can cause fires, although they can be disposed of at recycling bank or battery bins in supermarkets.

Meanwhile, Christmas trees can be recycled via St Rocco’s Hospice’s tree collection service for a small donation.

WBC’s tips will remain open throughout December.
