A STRICT Covid-19 three-tier system will come into force at midnight in England when the lockdown ends after MPs voted for it.

It was backed this evening, Tuesday – despite a rebellion from 55 Tory MPs – following a debate in the House of Commons.

The majority of Labour MPs abstained.

The vote was passed 291 to 78 votes.

During the debate, Prime Minister Boris Johnson defended his plan for exiting England's national lockdown to move into a revised system of tiered restrictions.

He said: "Of course, I accept that this is not a return to normality – I wish it were so.

"But it is a bit closer to normality than the present restrictions and what we can't do is to lift all the restrictions at once or move too quickly in such a way that the virus would begin to spread rapidly again."

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said it is ‘not in the national interest’ to vote down the restrictions so his party would allow them to pass.

He said that he accepts the case for restrictions but called for a plan that is going to work, adding the Prime Minister’s current plan is ‘full of holes’.

The new restrictions will come into force in England when the lockdown ends at 00.01am tomorrow, Wednesday.

Warrington will become a tier two ‘high alert’ level area.

The tier two restrictions state you must not socialise with anyone you do not live with or who is not in your support bubble in any indoor setting, whether at home or in a public place.

The ‘rule of six’ will apply outdoors, so you must not socialise in a group of more than six people outside, including in a private garden or a public space.

Businesses and venues are able to open as long as they continue to operate in a Covid-19 secure manner.

However, there are a number of tough restrictions.

Pubs and bars must remain closed unless they are serving substantial meals, table service only in premises which sell alcohol, venues must close between 11pm and 5am and stop taking orders from 10pm - but delivery service, click-and-collect or drive-through can continue after 10pm.
